Ancient Egypt: My mummies!

In conjunction with our ancient Egyptian studies, we mummified two of our dolls. We did this at night, and I'm not sure if it was really as funny as I thought - or if I was just super tired - but this activity has me cracking up. First, the corpses were put on the table, they were cleansed and preserved with pretend oils, salts and spices. Then their organs were removed, cleansed and placed in jars.

Here's E! unwrapping one of the "hearts" (a plastic potatoe. lol!). Some of the Egyptians believed that the hearts were weighed by one of their gods. If the heart was heavy with sin their afterlife would be sorrowful, if light with righteousness they'd have a happy afterlife.

Here's "Addie" the mummy.

And "Panda" the mummy.

After a parade and three-layer coffins, the mummies were taken inside the pyramid (or under our kitchen table). Then toys, foods and treasures were brought inside for the deceased to use once they began their next life.

This was actually quite a timely topic, since we were simultaneously discussing Easter and our personal beliefs about what happens after this life. It gave us something to compare to, and helped the girls realize that not everyone believes the same thing.
