Homeschool: Fire safety

Sadly, 52 percent of children's fire deaths occurs in children 4 years old and younger. Hence, a week of fire safety at our house.

We checked out a ton of great books from the library and a Fireman Sam video. Just in case you don't know about Fireman Sam < --- this link will get you to the Sprout site with some videos and coloring sheets. The firefighters at our local fire station highly endorse the educational cartoon.

We also did a science experiment about fire - and got the idea here.
What three things does fire need to burn?
1. heat     2. air    3. fuel
With our first candle, the girls cooled the fire down by squirting it with water (they did it more than once because it was so much fun).
For the second candle, the girls took away the candle's air by putting a glass jar over top.
For the third candle, we talked about different kinds of fuel.

We stressed that they should not try to put out a fire themselves, but to shout "Fire!" and get away from it.

Other fire safety topics of the week:
* We came up with our evacuation plan, and a meeting spot outside our home.
* We tested our fire alarms.
* We practiced Stop, Drop and Roll.
* We talked about crawling low, checking to see if a door is hot, and how to open their bedroom window and yell for help.
* We had several fire drills.
* We took a field trip to the fire station ... more on that coming soon!
