Homeschool: Fire station field trip

Last Friday, we took a field trip to the fire station - and the kind fire fighters gave us a personalized tour of their engines, ambulances, and living quarters.
They even let the girls pretend to drive the truck with the lights swirling.

I thought it was sweet how the firemen talked at their level, explaining the importance to never hide from a firefighter. They took out their masks and gear, and showed them how they looked "all dressed up." They even let the girls check out a special heat-sensitive camera to detect people in a pitch black, smoke-filled room.

In the ambulance, they saw a stretcher and the stuffed animals that they give to little ones who feel scared but need help (more on that later too). Inside the living quarters, we saw where they eat and learned that they don't have a mom there to make food for them, so they each take turns with different meals. We saw where they sleep, exercise and watch TV. We learned how to tie a knot on a rope and use it as a zipper pull. :) I think the girls enjoyed it.
