Homeschool ABCs

The sound of the typewriter keys slapping the paper and the ring at the end of the row, makes me smile. What a blessing it was to find this typewriter with a "free" label in our church's hallway. I had been searching for an old typewriter in our garage, and never found it. It was a tender mercy. Then, we couldn't get it to work ... so I called Office Depot, ordered some ribbon (wrong size), then returned at Office Depot (right size), but the typewriter still didn't work. Until we said a prayer. Then the Spirit prompted me to push a button on the inside of the typewriter - and wha la!

Here's how we used the typewriter for homeschool this week:

For Big Sis: Spelling and creative writing.
I'd call out spelling words, and she'd type them. Also, she wanted to write a newsletter for Dad (because that's what the American Girl named Kit does). Maybe she'll have some journalistic passions like her mom? Anyway, she knew what wanted to write and she'd ask how to spell every word ... that took up a lot of Mom's attention, so she then had a lesson on using a child's dictionary to look up how to spell things.  Here's a sheet of her work:

For Lil Sis:For Lil Sis: Letter recognition and yoga moves. I'd call out a letter and she'd find it on the keyboard. She loved it. Also, the typing exercise seemed to bring out physical exercise ... at least, that's what I think of when I look at her balancing act in the photo below.
It's funny how little ones can not sit still.
