Here's another great read: "Roxaboxen" by Alice McLerran. It's about a special place created by neighborhood children out of boxes, cactus and other surroundings. Well, I had this book in my collection of school ammo, and one day Big asked if she could take a cardboard box outside to play with. It's like she was setting me up for the lesson! So, we sat out the picnic blanket and read the story. They immediately wanted to create their own place.
They named their town Flower Bed, after a conducted vote in town hall. Big Sis accepted the role as a democratic queen. Lil Sis opened a store on main street - it sold microphones, cookies, highchairs and pretty much anything you might need. E! and I attended the Queen's ball and had a grand time.
After an hour or so, I went inside to make dinner while they continued playing. The town grew more complex with every passing minute. These are the memories I hope they hold onto. I know I will.
So, next time you worry about picking out the perfect present, just give them a box ... and maybe a copy of "Roxaboxen."
