I am in love with this book we got at the library (I might need it for our personal collection!), and am now inspired to learn more about Sarah Hales. I think I can add her to my list of heroes. In this true story about how Sarah Hales saves Thanksgiving, we learned that the pen is mightier than the sword, and that it's good to be stubborn for what you believe in.
We also had an AWESOME activity to try with it. The girls' great grandpa Joe Joe got these wild turkey feathers in Wyoming. Aren't they beautiful? We've been using them as decoration around the house ... and saving them for the perfect teaching moment. This was it! Joe Joe used his talents to turn several of the feathers into quills.
We bought some ink from the craft store, watched a You Tube tutorial of how to write with a quill, then went to work. The ink bottle said "waterproof" all over it - so I wrapped up the table and the girls in tarps. :) If I were doing this again, I think I would have just mixed paint with water ... Anyway, it was so fun. The girls practiced and practiced, taking the exercise seriously. It gave us an opportunity to talk about how difficult it would have been to write thousands of letters, like Sarah Hale did, using a quill. Add pencils, pens, crayons and computers to the lengthy list of things we're thankful for.
