During our nature pattern unit, we studied six categories of patterns:
Symmetry, circular, branching, tessellation, linear and spiral.
We only found one spiral pattern during our hike (a curled up caterpillar) - sorry no pic on this post.
Even though Lil Sis is only 3 years old, she'd correctly identify each pattern - just simplify the name a bit. She'd say "circles" or "lines" instead of circular or linear.
Tessellation was often referred to as the "puzzle" pattern - much easier to say.
After I wrote the pattern name on the top paper, the girls would draw
an example of that type of pattern. This helped solidify the idea, after we had looked online
at images of the patterns and read a few books.
