One day we had a picnic in the shade of the famous banyan tree in Lahina.
She was excited to see her name already carved in one of the trunks - look at that face! :)
On another Lahina afternoon, after the dolphin watch, we met Betty. Every week, local Lahina seniors gather and make leis, then sell them to support locals who need help paying for a flight to the mainland to attend college. Betty taught the girls how to make leis, and let them help pick which flowers would go next. Then, Mom got to wear it when it was all done. She talked to us for a long time, and Big Sis loved her dearly.
Look at these beautiful finished products.
Another must in Lahina: shaved ice. Yum. Mom and Dad split a coconut flavored one with real coconut shavings on top ... mmm. The girls went for a rainbow of flavors. A perfect treat in the hot sun! {Mom tried not to notice the food coloring dyes -- we were on vacation, right!?}
