Good things come to those who wait.
Last Sunday night, we watched this video (thanks to Dalee's blog), and Big Sis immediately asks, "Can we do that for Family Home Evening?!" Of course we can! The next day, Big keeps reminding me she wants to play the marshmallow game for FHE. She explains it to Lil Sis - whose love for food makes her equally excited. We watch the video that night, then we set up our modified version. We don't have marshmallows, so we play with cookies. Everyone starts with half of a cookie, if you wait the allotted time (set chicken timer), you get the second half. Ah, the thrill!
Alex and I head upstairs to change a diaper and give them a little temptation. After a few minutes, I snuck down to take a snap shot of what they were up to:
Big waited. She waited and waited. And as she waited, she smiled. She encouraged Lil Sis - and explained the rules over and over again.
Lil crumbled her cookie into pieces. She nibbled on small chunks. She proudly proclaimed, "It's my choice!" And when the timer buzzed, she still had 90 percent of her cookie left.
What I learned: Both girls, who chose different ways of waiting, were able to wait happily. The prize was right in front of them. They knew what was coming if they could just hold on a little longer. For most of us waiting for something - whether it be waiting for someone, waiting for a trial to pass, waiting for life to change for the better or waiting to help someone who isn't ready for the help yet -it's difficult. We don't have a timer telling us how much longer; and we don't have a prize within sight. BUT, what brings me comfort is knowing Heavenly Father can see the big picture. He knows what's coming next, He knows how much longer and He wants to bless us with amazing and eternal blessings if we can just make it through. So, chin up. Smile. And remember - good things come to those who wait.

What a great idea to actually do the activity (and what a easy family home evening:)and great lesson)I'm keepin' that one up my sleeve...to bad I didn't have that one last night at 8:30 when everyone was staring at me asking what we are doing for FHE! AAAAA!
I'm so happy that Heavenly Father wants to give me TWO marshmellows!
we actually did this just last night with friends over and all the kids waited to get 2 (Venice did lick hers but that was the extend of temptation)...I asked myself why? why did they all wait? do we have the 30% of people right here in our living room? and then I realized why 6 kids all under the age of 6 would wait. they were doing the experiment all together. HUGE peer pressure to not give in, cave and eat the treat when someone else next to you isn't. so it was cool that we ended up talking about the influence of good friends and how good friends keep your eye on the prize.
P.S. thanks for being my good friend!
That looks like fun...I dont think my kids would be able to stand it...haha~ The cookies would probably be eaten by the time I got back down stairs! But all kiddos need practice, like your friend said, looking at the big picture. Are they going to be pressured into it or be the leader and not give in
